God, he had such a headache.
It was his last coherent thought before he opened his eyes and the light came.
Light and dark blinded him, thick red blood choked him, screams of pain deafened him. Heat pooled in his leg, metal gleamed in his peripheral vision. Too much data, not enough room to sit and collect and think.
He needed less time than it would take to blink and he didn't have even that much.
So he moved...swimming in a crisp white sea of fire and gleaming shards, bright razors of pain that blotted out memory and rationality. The blood still choked him, warm and intoxicating while instinct drove him forward. He couldn't think...and there was so much blood...
In. Out. Up. Down.
Over, under, around the tree, swing past the knothole...It was a long time before he could hear the sirens, see the bodies. Everyone clear of the car, each of them safe from harm.
And all the while, the blood choked him, rich and warm...his own blood, pouring from the gaping red hole in his upper thigh.
He timed the seconds he had left as he reached for his cell phone and pressed on the number one key, waiting until the number popped up on the display. He heard it ring even over the blood rushing through his ears and out of his damaged leg.
“911, what's your emergency?”“Car accident, Sunset and...Vine. Three, not counting me.”
“Are you injured, sir?”“Yes...bleeding, too.” he slurred, slumping to the pavement with the operator crowing in his ear before the world dissolved to black.
